So, you've recently heard a lot about wood-burning stoves and decided to get one for your home. But how much does it cost? Of course, there's the stove price itself, but that's just one part of the picture. The preparation, installation, and extras can all add up. If this is your first time buying and installing a wood burner, there's a lot to get your head around.

Don’t worry – that’s why we’re here!

This guide covers all the necessary and potential costs associated with installing a log burner, including materials and labour for different wood-burning stoves. Plus, we've listed some essential maintenance and running costs to help you plan what you'll spend to keep your stove burning well after installing it.

What’s more, we've also put together some of our top picks based on your budget to give you a better idea of the stoves available for what you've got to spend.

So, keep reading, and by the end, you’ll feel like an expert on the cost of installing a log burner in 2023.

How much does installing a log burner cost, on average?

The average price to install a wood burner ranges from £700 to £3,500.

How much you’ll end up paying for the entire thing depends on several factors. These include:

  • The type of stove you choose
  • The installer who fits your stove
  • If your home already has a chimney
  • If your chimney needs lining
  • If you need a hearth installed
Job
Average Cost
Wood burner with an existing chimney £700 - £2,000
Wood burner with new fireplace £1,000 - £3,000
Wood burner with new chimney/flue £1,500 - £3,500

Choosing the right stove for your home

The average installation cost will depend on the type of wood-burning stove you choose. Stoves range in price from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds. How much you spend on a stove depends primarily on personal choice and your budget. But you should be aware that some factors might impact the stove you can get. For example:

  • The size of your room
  • If you plan to burn wood or other fuels, such as smokeless coal
  • The style and look you want for your home
  • The size of your existing fireplace

Not all stoves might fit your unique requirements, so to get a clearer idea of what you can expect to spend on the appliance itself, start with a list of what you need from it and go from there.

You can also use our handy stove size calculator to determine what size you need for your room.

Preparing your home for a stove

If your home does not have an existing chimney, you can expect to pay more for the installation. This is because you’ll need a chimney system for your stove to work.

On average, this can cost you an additional £1000 to £2,000.

Even if your home already has a fireplace and chimney ready to install your wood burner, remember the cost of preparing the area for the stove. If your chimney has been out of action for a while, you'll need to pay for a sweep to prepare it for your new wood burner.

What are the main types of wood burners you can install?

The cost of having a stove fitted will vary depending on the type of wood burner that you choose for your home. There are three main types of wood burners to choose from. These are:

Wood burning only

  • Can only burn wood or logs of an appropriate moisture content
  • Has a flat base
  • Air is pulled from above
  • Cost between £800 - £3,000

Multi-fuel

  • Can burn both wood and other fuels
  • Has a grate
  • Air is pulled from below the stove
  • Cost between £800 - £3,000

Range cookers

  • Can be used for both heating and cooking
  • Either wood-burning or multi-fuel
  • Traditionally installed within a kitchen
  • Costs between £1200 - £5,000

How much is labour for installing a wood burner?

The price you pay to the installer to fit your wood burner depends on the work you need. If you've already got a chimney system and fireplace, you'll need a standard installation which takes 1-2 days, on average. You can expect a complete renovation project to take 5-7 days and involve more work.

Whether you have a chimney in your home also impacts the cost of labour. The installer must fit a twin wall flue system if you don't have a chimney. This creates a chimney system in your home, ensuring a safe place for toxic gases to escape from the stove.

A twin wall flue is a metal piping system you'll need to purchase separately from your wood burner.

On average, you can expect to pay between £700-£1000 for a single-storey kit.

Checkatrade says that if you need to install a twin-wall flue, budget around £2,000 to cover all the extra materials you’ll need.

A total renovation stove fitting includes everything. Expect chimney sweeping, lining,  fitting of the stove and hearth, and a clean-up once it’s all done.

The cost of labour will also vary depending on your location.

Job
Average  Labour Cost
Installation with existing chimney (dropping the liner and connecting the stove) £650
Installation of a stove and twin wall flue system in a home without an existing chimney £1,000
Installer day rates £120 - £200

Do you need a chimney liner?

Chimney liners stop toxic emissions from escaping through gaps in the brickwork and getting into your home. They're essential in preventing chimney fires and keeping your home safe. You might need a chimney liner fitted before having a wood burner installed.

You will need to have your chimney lined or re-lined if:

  • You live in an older property without a lined chimney.
  • Your chimney has been lined in the past, but the liner is damaged.
  • Your existing chimney liner is designed for a gas fire.

A flexible metal flue liner is used for relining an existing brick chimney. This costs £325 - £450, on average.

Potential additional costs

The process and price for installing a wood burner are based on your unique home and requirements. Some other costs you may need to budget for are as follows:

Job
Average Cost
Chimney sweep £50
Chimney cowl £70 (Buy here)
Carbon Monoxide Detector £30 (Buy here)

Do you need a hearth for your log burner?

You might need to buy a separate hearth depending on where you want the stove to go in your home.

With a fireplace recess:

If you've already got a fireplace recess and will have the stove installed there, it can be placed on a constructional hearth that's already built into the floor.

Most people prefer to install a new hearth on top of the constructional hearth for aesthetic purposes.

Without a fireplace recess:

Not every home has a fireplace these days. New build homes are often designed without them, with the expectation you’ll be using the central heating for warmth. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a stove installed. A modern, free-standing stove installation is a popular choice for new builds.

If you install your stove somewhere other than a fireplace recess, you will need a free-standing hearth. In this case, you'll need to ensure 150mm of space on each side of the stove and 300mm at the front.

The type of stove you get will determine what kind of hearth you need. Some stoves are cool-hearth-rated. If you plan to place the stove on a combustible floor, such as a wooden floor, you can install it on a 12mm superimposed hearth constructed from glass or manufactured slate.

If you need to buy a hearth for fitting your log burner, the main factor that’ll impact the price is the material it’s made from.

Type of Hearth
Average Cost
Slate £60 - £250
Glass £100 - £350
Tiles £30 - £100

Do I need ventilation?

You may need to factor ventilation into the overall cost of purchasing and installing a stove. Good ventilation is essential for a stove to combust and evacuate flue gases successfully. Without the correct ventilation, your stove will not light, and smoke will billow into your home, making for a frustrating and scary experience.

You will need ventilation if your house was built after 2008. You will only need ventilation for homes built before 2008 if your stove has over 5kW heat output.

An air source must be present for the stove to empty the smoke into the flue or chimney. Many modern stoves can attach an external air supply, while others come with an external air kit that connects to the stove.

Ideally, you should have a vent as close to the stove as possible. It should be placed at an angle or in any way that will not be obstructed by debris.

Typically, you can expect it to be installed on the floor, wall, or ceiling. If needed, it will usually be included as part of the stove installation process.

Ongoing costs of running a wood-burner

Knowing the ongoing costs of running your stove and how to save money in the long run is crucial.

Chimney maintenance

Most people might conjure visions of Mary Poppins singing ‘Chim-Chim-er-ee’ if asked to picture a chimney sweep. But the fact is that this is still a modern and relevant profession, especially as log burners become more and more popular.

Once a log burner is installed, chimney sweeping will become essential to your ongoing home maintenance.

It’s necessary to prevent dangerous flue fires and remove toxic emissions, ensuring that your home is clean and safe. The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) recommend having your chimney swept at least once a year.

The best time to clean the chimney is before or after a long period of disuse, just before summer or winter.

A chimney sweep typically costs around £50.

Stove fuel costs

How much you'll pay to run your stove depends on where you source firewood. If you can obtain free or cheap freshly cut wood and are happy to season it yourself, then the cost of running a stove may be barely noticeable.

On the other hand, if you need to purchase seasoned, ready-to-burn wood, the type you use will determine the cost. In general, you can expect to pay the following:

Fuel
Average Cost
Wood pellet £120 per cubic metre
Kiln-dried logs £135 per cubic metre
Seasoned logs £116 per cubic metre
Briquettes £150 per cubic metre

The average stove owner uses around 3-4 cubic metres of wood annually. The exact price you'll pay for the amount you need will depend on the location and the merchant you purchase it from.

Freshly cut logs are often cheaper to obtain compared to dry. However, the downside is that you'll need to dry them out before they are suitable for use on the stove. Otherwise, you won't get a high heat output. Check out our handy guide to setting up a log store if this sounds like something you’d like to try.

What's the work involved in installing a wood-burning stove?

  1. If you have a chimney, it might need a liner fitting before a stove can be installed. The installer will fit the liner into the existing flue to prevent toxic carbon monoxide from entering your home by directing it through the chimney and outdoors.
  2. You may also need to have your chimney cleaned before installation. This can be a dirty job that creates dust, so the chimney sweep may need to prepare the area by sealing doors and covering all furniture with dust sheets.
  3. If you don't have a chimney at home, you must have a twin wall flue system fitted. This is usually installed through a wall outside the property to the roof.
  4. You will need to consider the distance to combustible materials. The exact distance will depend on the model you choose. Most models come with a guide in the manufacturer's handbook on how far the stove should be from walls and other surfaces.
  5. Once complete, you might need to factor in the cost of paying a plasterer to skim any damaged walls.

What is HETAS?

HETAS (Heating Equipment and Testing Approval Scheme) are an organisation that certifies the work meets building regulations after a wood-burning stove is installed. It is best to have a HETAS-registered installer fit your stove. They will ensure these regulations are met throughout the process and inspect it once done.

You can self-install the stove, but you will need to have it checked for safety and signed off by Building Control. Contact your local building inspector to do this. You will usually be able to contact them through your council.

On average, this will cost £300 but can be more, depending on your area.
