What Types of Bioethanol Stoves Are There?
Bioethanol stoves are quickly becoming the must-have home accessory. They provide the beauty of real flames in your home, with minimal fuss and maximum convenience and cleanliness. If you’re thinking of buying one, then you may be wondering what your options are. Keep reading and the Direct Stoves team will give you a tour of the different bioethanol stove types…
What are bioethanol stoves?
If you’re new to the world of stoves - and many people are, given their recent rocketing popularity - then you may be wondering what exactly bioethanol stoves are.
Well, forgive the somewhat obvious answer, but a bioethanol stove is a heating appliance that is fuelled by bioethanol.
Bioethanol (which is sometimes simply called ‘ethanol’) is a type of liquid fuel which is manufactured by fermenting the sugar and starch elements from plants such as sugar cane, straw, and other similar types of plant.
It’s the plant-based origin of this type of ethanol that gives it the prefix ‘bio’.
The result of the fermentation process is a liquid which has a high alcohol content. As a result, bioethanol is extremely clean burning, producing virtually zero emissions or combustion-related materials.
Are bioethanol stoves easy to use?
As bioethanol stoves are still relatively new to most people here in the UK, we often get asked how easy they are to use.
The answer is very!
Bioethanol tends to be sold in convenient plastic bottles (typically of around 1 litre capacity).
Using a bioethanol stove is as simple as buying some of these plastic bottles and then filling up the stove’s ‘burner tray’. Once filled, the burner tray is ignited and the bioethanol will burn until it runs out.

Should you want to turn off a bioethanol stove when it’s ‘mid-burn’, the majority of stoves feature a sliding mechanism which slides over the burner tray to extinguish the flames.
This sliding mechanism can sometimes also be used to modulate how much the bioethanol is burning - being opened or closed to decrease or increase the flow of air to the bioethanol and thus affecting how much the bioethanol burns.
And, that’s about it! As we’ve written previously, bioethanol stoves are exceptionally easy appliances to use and maintain. It’s for that reason that more and more people are choosing bioethanol stoves to create a very distinctive visual feature in their homes.
Note - although bioethanol stoves are extremely clean burning, they should always be used in a well ventilated area.
The different types of bioethanol stove
Just as there are many different types and styles of fireplace and log burner you can choose from, the same is the case for bioethanol stoves.
Because bioethanol stoves are such simple appliances, they are available in a truly dizzying array of styles, shapes, sizes and dimensions. To give you an idea of just how varied bioethanol stoves can be, we’ve taken a tour of the different types below.
Freestanding bioethanol stoves
Arguably, one of the most eye-catching types of bioethanol stove you can buy is a freestanding bioethanol stove.
Freestanding bioethanol stoves can be located almost anywhere within the home and often feature striking aesthetics such as beautiful solid colour finishes and brushed steel components.
Many people also choose to match freestanding bioethanol stoves with other bold features within the home - such as placing them within the mouth of an old fireplace.
